Mental Health Peer Support

What is a Mental Health Peer Support Worker?

A Mental Health Peer Support Worker is someone who uses both professional training and their own lived experience of mental health challenges, recovery, disability, or other life experiences to support others on their recovery journey.
Unlike a psychologist, counsellor, or psychiatrist, a Peer Support Worker does not diagnose, treat, or provide therapy. Instead, they walk alongside you as someone who understands that recovery can be challenging because they have experienced their own journey.

ALMISHA Peer Support

At ALMISHA Peer Support, I combine my Diploma of Mental Health with over 20 years of lived experience navigating mental health, chronic pain, disability, neurodiversity, trauma, and the NDIS.
My role is to provide hope, encouragement, practical support, education, and guidance while helping you build confidence, independence, and a meaningful life.
Peer support is based on the belief that recovery is possible and that no one should have to face life's challenges alone.

My approach is:

  • Recovery-oriented
  • Person-centred
  • Trauma-informed
  • Strengths-based
  • Evidence-informed
  • Respectful and non-judgemental

Every person's recovery journey is unique, so together we develop support that suits your goals, needs, strengths, interests, and pace.

How can I help?

Every support plan is personalised to your individual needs and recovery goals.

Together, we can work on:

What I Don't Do

To ensure safe, ethical, and professional practice, there are some things I cannot provide as a Mental Health Peer Support Worker.

I do not:

  • diagnose mental health conditions
  • provide counselling or psychotherapy
  • prescribe or recommend medication
  • provide medical advice
  • provide legal advice
  • provide financial advice
  • replace your GP, psychologist, psychiatrist, or other health professionals
  • provide crisis intervention or emergency mental health services
  • complete clinical assessments or formal diagnoses
  • make decisions on your behalf
  • force you to participate in activities
  • provide personal care or nursing services
  • guarantee NDIS funding or approval

If your needs fall outside my scope of practice, I will support you to connect with the most appropriate professional or service.
